A TANTALISING final-round clash with Williamstown looms this Saturday after Werribee Tigers continued their push towards flag contenders, beating Bendigo by 66 points and securing fourth spot at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo, on Saturday.
The victory didn't come with the ease many expected after Bendigo's one-goal effort against Williamstown the week before, but the Tigers were clinical in edging out their opponents, galloping away with a six-to-none goal last quarter.
Coach Simon Atkins said: "We didn't think we were just going to come here and waltz away with the game.
"In the last quarter we started to play our game of football.
"It was good to get a victory."
Captain James Podsiadly led from the front yet again, taking 10 marks and booting 7.6, taking his season's tally to 70, He's right in the hunt for the Jim 'Frosty' Miller Medal.
Going into the game without the injured and in-form Dominic Gleeson and impressive young full-back James Saker was always going to be a challenge for the young squad but the Tigers stood up and worked hard.
"We had two first-gamers [Paul Kennelly and James Wilsen] this week, and they've been able to step up and [have] slotted in well," Atkins said.
Matt Riggio was also back to his best, making an impression on Atkins.
"Twelve tackles and really hard at the football, and finished with 30-odd possessions. He was tough, hard and strong at the football for us," he said.
It was a tight first quarter, with Werribee slightly edging ahead at quarter-time, then increasing its lead in the second.
But it was scrappy football, and despite a 25-point lead at the final break there was still an air of uncertainty, especially with Hayden Skipworth (36 touches, 10 clearances) having such an influential game for the Bombers.
The Tigers romped away, however, with Rob Castello having one of his better games for the year, getting the prune 28 times, taking six marks and booting three goals.
North ruckman Todd Goldstein was also solid with a whopping 50 hit-outs.
The Tigers take on the Seagulls at Burbank Oval, Williamstown, at 2pm Saturday.
Williamstown smashed Werribee in round one to the tune of 56-points with Seagull recruit Callum Urch snaring five goals.
Urch is back in top form after kicking another bag of five against the Box Hill Hawks on the weekend.
Atkins believes the result will be a lot closer this time around.
"It's a fantastic opportunity to play someone above us. We're in the finals now, and really looking forward to the hitout," he said.
The Tigers are also set to regain star midfielder Gleeson after a foot injury kept him out of the solid win over the Bombers on Saturday.
Gleeson trained on Monday night and will have a fitness test on Friday.
Tigers' young gun Jak Kennedy-Hunt booted 10 goals in the Tigers' 154-point win against Bendigo Bombers in the reserves on Saturday.
