 Tigers pounce, march onward

Tigers pounce, march onward

WERRIBEE sounded alarm bells to the rest of the competition with an emphatic 60-point victory over the improved Box Hill Hawks at Bartercard Oval on Saturday.

The Tigers continue to creep towards the top four, heading into Saturday's match against Bendigo Bombers as hot favourites ahead of the showdown against Williamstown at Burbank Oval on August 30.

The Hawks, coming into the game off a resounding 20-goal smashing of Bendigo, were taught a lesson by the slick and impressive Tigers, 18.9 (117) to 7.15 (57).

While the game was still up for grabs at half-time, with Werribee leading by a goal, it was the Tigers who blew the match apart with a six-goal-to-none third term in front of a small crowd.

James Podsiadly led from the front for the Tigers, booting six goals in one of his best performances for the season, impressing coach Simon Atkins, who lauded his captain's ability to adapt to different situations.

"I thought he was really, really good today. We've set up certain structures that probably don't suit 'Pods' but we always expect three or four out of him," Atkins said.

The crowd was very quiet as it watched an inauspicious start, but the Box Hill contingent began to cheer with two of their forwards in Zac Dawson and Alister Neville presenting well.

The Tigers were playing 'cute', but a flurry of late goals gave them control. Agonising misses from the Hawks proved costly as Werribee pounced in the second half.

Hamish McIntosh was a welcome addition for the Tigers in his first game back, having 26 hit-outs as well as slotting two goals and having 20 touches, in a good sign he is getting over the knee injury.

Werribee continued on its merry way in the final term and it looked as if it was going to be a goalless second half for Box Hill before a late one.

The Werribee back line was superb.

Werribee travels to Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo this Saturday.

Punters have jumped on Werribee's surge, with premiership odds plummeting from $21 into $15 to make it fifth favourite for an elusive VFL flag.

James Podsiadly's six goals on Saturday take him to 64 for the season, just four behind Sandringham's Nick Sautner for the race for the league's goalkicking award, the (Jim) Frosty Miller Medal.

Sportsbet VFL premiership betting:

Williamstown $2.75

North Ballarat $4.50
