Tigers gain place in eight

25/06/2008 12:00:00 AM
THE hoodoo continued for Tasmania with Werribee keeping its extraordinary eight-year unbeaten run alive with an emphatic 65-point win at Bellerive Oval on Saturday.

Despite an insipid first half, the Tigers' avalanche of goals with a barnstorming 14 in the second half has put Werribee's roller-coaster season back on track with a spot in the eight for the first time this year. Scores were 17.19 (121) to 7.14 (56).

It was the Tigers' most explosive half of football for the season, kick-started with Levi Greenwood's pass onto the chest of Ben Warren, who kicked his first major of the day.

Dom Gleeson snapped a goal after a cluster of handballs from his team-mates, while Rupertswood product Matt Quigley, on debut, kicked a penetrating goal that put the visitors seven points in front early in the third term.

Everything began to click for the Tigers, with Leigh Brown and Scott Thompson taking strong marks in defence and captain James Podsiadly inspiring his team, almost as a quarter-back at centre half-back.

Ben Ross swooped on the ball, finishing with 27 disposals, and Michael Barlow continued his meteoric rise in his first season in the league after playing local football last year.

The Tigers led by 30 points at the last change and continued to play with confidence.

Podsiadly's booming goal from 55 metres was testament the Tigers could do no wrong.

Coach Simon Atkins is dumbfounded at the clubs' stranglehold over Tassie.

"I'm from Tasmania and right from Monday when we were going down there, you'd get rung by reporters asking: 'What are you going to do about this hoodoo?' But it's not our hoodoo to deal with,'' Atkins said. "I don't know what it is but we didn't drive it too hard, but I know they did down there.''

Atkins said the interstate trip helped galvanise the team, which the previous week had its most demoralising defeat of the season, to league cellar-dwellers Box Hill Hawks.

Several new faces came into the line-up including Quigley and Taylor Collins, and a host of Kangaroos including Ben Davies and Leigh Brown.

"You don't do it that often and what it gives you a chance to do is the 22 players get away in a different environment. You travel, you train, you're together. We really got a bonus from all of that,'' he said.

The season was in the balance for both clubs heading into the match, with a win-loss record of 4-6 apiece.

The home team was on fire early with Werribee adjusting to its unique forward set-up that allowed Podsiadly to play a rebounding defender.

Luke Shackleton and Ben Setchell provided early headaches for the Tiger defence with a couple of early goals.

It took 41 minutes for the Tigers to register their first major through Barlow, before the juggernaut began.

"I was pretty confident that if we got our structures right, because we do play a running brand of football, that we would be able to get Tassie off a bit,'' Atkins said.

"I really think the Podsiadly move just threw them out and they couldn't get their match-ups in our forward end and we were getting enough supply. It was a real pat on the back for our blokes for persistence.

"Twenty-three inside 50s in the first quarter for no goals has got to be some sort of world record.''
