Policeman injured in street brawl

2/07/2008 8:52:00 AM
A POLICE officer was hit in the face with a colleague's baton as he tried to break up a brawl between seven youths in Werribee last Thursday.

A patrol arrived in Station Place just after 11pm to find seven youths fighting. Another man was stopped for trying to drive off while under the influence of alcohol, police said.

When the police tried to break up the brawlers, one of them grabbed a police baton and threw it at another officer, resulting in a slight head injury.

The gang was subdued with capsicum spray and a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault.

He is expected to be charged on summons with assaulting police, assault with a weapon and other offences.

Police said the man caught trying to flee the scene is a 23-year-old disqualified and unlicensed driver, who was expected to be charged on summons.

The injured officer was taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital for treatment.
