Drivers dicing with death on rail crossings

27/08/2008 2:05:00 PM
WERRIBEE police will next month start a zero-tolerance blitz on drivers and pedestrians who disobey the signals at Wyndham's three railway level crossings.

The move comes in the wake of a spate of near misses across the municipality in recent months.

Earlier this year, Wyndham's three major railway crossings were rated among the most dangerous in the state.

The Werribee Street crossing was ranked the seventh most dangerous, with Cherry Street rated 13 and Hoppers Crossing 19.

The results were part of a two-year State Government audit of Victoria's 1872 level crossings, which were ranked according to national safety criteria.

Senior Constable Ray Schembri said that despite repeated warnings, drivers and pedestrians continued to risk their lives.

"There are drivers who queue across the railway line and then become a sitting duck when the boom gates come down," he said.

"Some drivers try to go around the boom gates while the lights are flashing. When a train hits a car

there can only be one result.

"Despite the heavy advertising campaign highlighting the dangers associated with level crossings, people still flout the law.

"Whether you're a driver or a pedestrian, if you fail to take the boom gates seriously, we'll take action."

A spokesman for the Department of Transport said the Cherry Street level crossing was particularly troublesome.

"There's a tendency for road users to queue across the crossing as they approach the Railway Avenue roundabout."

The spokesman said the department was working with the Australian Rail Track Corporation, Connex and Wyndham Council on a solution.

"All road users need to drive safely and obey the signs whenever they a approach level crossing."

Senior Constable Schembri said drivers caught disobeying lights or stopping in the middle of a level crossing faced on-the-spot fines of $567 and could also lose four demerit points.

Pedestrians who enter while the boom gates are closed or warning signals are operating can be fined $278.

Pedestrians crossing a railway line other than at a level crossing are also liable.
