After a long wait, residents go to town

THE first stage of Point Cook's community hub opened last week with thousands pouring through the doors on Thursday and over the weekend.

Residents association president Daniel Mumby said the first stage of the Point Cook shopping centre was fast becoming the suburb's focal point.

"I think it actually focuses Point Cook around a central hub, which it has really lacked before," he said. "Now you have a central place where people will go and congregate."

Mr Mumby said he believed people, not buildings and infrastructure, gave a place its community appeal. "I know architects will disagree with me, but I think it gives a congregation point for the people who are, in fact, the soul of the area."

At last night's Wyndham Council meeting a tender was approved to supply books to the Point Cook Community Learning Centre library. Almost $1 million will be spent on books for the centre, which is expected to open in October next year.
